It's not that boring.

Most of the Debate events are done in teams of 2 people. With the exception of Parliamentary Debate, all events require prior preparation. Current topics can be found under each event title or on the NSDA website. Each event has a different set of speaking times, which will be listed as a link. Debate tournaments are typically 3 rounds in the league, but may include additional elimination rounds at Invitationals and Qualifiers. Also, the number of preliminary rounds (rounds in which you are guaranteed to compete in and dictate whether you will move on) may change.

If you are listed as the negation for your first round, you will be the affirmation for your second, and vice versa. Your third and final round (given that it is a league tournament), will be decided on a coin toss. Therefore, it is imperative that you research both sides of the topic.

Parliamentary Debate (Parli):

Parliamentary Debate is a limited preparation team debate in which you are given a topic 20 min before the round starts. Parliamentary Debate allows the competitors to define the type of debate (ex. value, fact, policy) based on the resolution.

EX: This house will close its borders.

This is a type of metaphorical resolution; you and your teammate must decide whether to interpret it as a value, policy, or fact debate if you are the affirmation. The negation must be prepared for what the opposing team decides.
