While we wish we lived in a world where everything is free, sadly that's not the case.
Tournaments cost money, and dues alone are not enough to finance the team for the entire competition season. We do not want to ask members to pay for their own entry fees since that would be an extreme financial burden. That is why, in addition to asking for dues, we encourage and require all members to be active in the fundraising process. This involves donating concession items, helping at the event, and getting the word out about our fundraisers. The best fundraisers we've had have been the ones where the entire team was involved in helping out.
Booster Club and PTSA
Also known as The Gods Among Men.
We started 2014 off with the dreadful news that our funding had been cut, and Speech and Debate would be put on hold. PTSA and Booster Club agreed to finance organizations affected by the budget cuts for FIRST SEMESTER ONLY. We faced this same financial issue last year (2013-2014) but we were lucky enough that Booster Club had enough money to fund the SOCES Speech and Debate Team as well as other organizations on the SOCES campus for the entire year.
PTSA and Booster have helped this team significantly by financing Berkeley and Stanford Invitationals, paying for our coach, and supporting the team in any way they could. We would like to ask all team members to become members of PTSA and Booster Club. Donations to these organizations are used to finance school activities, sports teams, as well as Speech and Debate.
Congress State Qualifiers
The SOCES Speech and Debate team has the honor of hosting the Congress State Qualifying tournament. This means that our team must provide food for both judges and competitors. This also provides us with a unique opportunity to raise a significant amount of funds from concession sales. To ensure that we have enough food for the event we have assigned each person a specific item that we need them to bring. In addition to the items listed below, we ask each student to bring in a $5 donation to cover pizza and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. We will also need student volunteers to bring in orange juice, apple juice, coffee creamer, coffee, bagels, cream cheese, and toasters.
We will also need parent volunteers. We need parents to be present the day of the tournament to help run the judges room food, and to prepare food that can be brought in (ie. salad, pasta, etc). If your parent can volunteer please fill out the parent volunteer form below.
