Students choose a work (movie, book, play, musical, speech, etc.) to perform without using props from memory. Special terms apply to OI and TI.  Pieces (the work you have chosen) must be nationally published. A new rule has allowed eBooks to be used as pieces within certain rules which can be found on page 5 of this document. You may either choose to perform an unedited section straight from the piece (a chapter, a scene), or you can pick and choose specific lines found throughout the piece. This is called cutting the piece, and you generally have a lot of freedom in this. However, you may not change the author's intent

(parody). You are allotted 150 original words. The piece has a time limit of 10 minutes, with a 30-second grace period, giving you a maximum time of 10:30. We advise that you aim for around 9 minutes.

Oratorical Interpretation (OI)

Students find a speech, whether in print or online, to perform. The speech must have been given in front of an audience. When choosing an online speech, the transcript must be available. TED Talks are a popular choice.

To succeed in OI, the goal is not merely to give a speech, but to become the speaker. This does not mean copy the exact performance of the original speaker, but to be passionate about the topic and speech.

OI is a Panel A event.

OI is a state event.
