What are IEs?

One of the most fun things you can do without breaking the law.

Our league, TCFL, offers 15 different IE events. IE stands for Individual Events. It is the most diverse of the 3 categories of Speech and Debate events. Here, you can find anything ranging from 7-minute speeches that explain how, yes, Obamacare will lead to nuclear war, to tear-jerking 10-minute scripts depicting a story of a young girl from a broken home dealing with substance abuse.

"I can't do IEs; I'm not an actor/actress!"

IEs are not simply acting events. While acting is involved in the majority of IE events, there are several events that don't require an ounce of theatrical talent. Extemporaneous Speaking is nearly identical to Parliamentary Debate; you are given a question such as "Should the US intervene in the Palestine/Israel conflict?" and then prepare a speech. In the TCFL, you are allowed to do up to 3 events, so go ahead and try everything!

Furthermore, don't limit yourself! You don't have to belt out I Dreamed A Dream to get a 1st place trophy. You don't have to make your judges' ribs break from laughing too hard to advance to finals. Don't be too scared of trying out an event you secretly love but think you don't have what it takes. You might surprise yourself. Speech and Debate is all about improving your comfort levels in public speaking, and you can be sure that this team will support you every single step of the way.
